Synopsis:

Living in a world where men were treated like a rare commodity, Ethan Spears did what he could in order to survive. But when the proverbial rug was pulled out from under him, desperate measures called for desperate actions. To save his sister, he entered The Lottery, offering himself to one woman for a year.

Karlyn Bowman was a rebel in her family, choosing not to climb the corporate ladder in order to pursue her love of art. Lonely, ostracized by the family who should have loved her, she pushed forward trying to become a success. When her friend gives her a lottery ticket to cheer her up, she puts it aside and forgets it. Imagine her surprise when the knock came to her door and her life—and his—were changed forever.

My Thoughts:

The year is 2106 and Ms. O’Hurley wastes no time in plunging readers into Ethan’s world. A world where men are considered for the most part to be chattel. They are bought and sold on a contract basis by rich women who can afford their company. Ethan has been ‘in service’ since he was a teenager. It’s evident he is an embittered soul who has had to endure a life of sexual slavery to survive. His most recent two year contract with Ophelia (a cruel narcissistic woman) has ended. Ethan hates Ophelia and he plans to move on to his next mistress. Ophelia has purchased another ‘boy toy’ and when she makes demands of Ethan that he finds abhorrent he walks out. Ophelia then sees to it that Ethan is ostracized by the wealthy, and he is unable to procure another contract.

Fast forward 4 years and readers meet gifted artist, Karlyn who is struggling for recognition of her paintings and to make ends meet. Karlyn is a sweet, insecure woman who has been ostracized by her family because of her choice of pursuing her art over a more lucrative career. It is her birthday and Karlyn’s successful, wealthy best friend Sam comes to take her out to dinner to celebrate. Sam recognizes her friend’s talent and has been Karlyn’s number one cheerleader with respect to her artistic endeavors. Sam has even purchased some of Karlyn’s paintings. As a birthday present Sam gifts Karlyn with a silver Federated Lottery ticket giving her the chance to win the company of a man for a year. At first Karlyn declines Sam’s extraordinarily expensive gift but after some convincing Karlyn accepts. After all there’s a chance in a million she will win right?

When a knock comes to the door of Karlyn’s loft and the most gorgeous man she has ever seen in her life, along with reporters and vid crew are standing there, she is beyond surprised. Shocked and scared to the point of being paralyzed is more like it. The fact is, Karlyn has no idea what to do with a man because she has never been in a relationship before. Ethan doesn’t know what to make of his new mistress, she is dressed in overalls covered in paint splotches and doesn’t seem to want him there. At first, Ethan and Karlyn’s relationship is quite adversarial in nature, but sexual tension and attraction increases to the boiling point and, gradually, feelings develop. Karlyn is unlike any woman Ethan has every known and that is saying a lot because he has ‘serviced’ many women.

Ms. O’Hurley has crafted a multlayered sensuous and emotional story in The Lottery. I have to say, I was surprised at the depth of emotion it provoked. Ethan is a man who I felt was a suppressed alpha male in many ways. He has been forced into a subservient sexual role which has lead to horrific unhappiness. To watch him gradually learn to trust Karlyn and grow to love her is sweet and special. Karlyn, as mentioned above is extremely insecure concerning her appearance and ability to succeed regarding her art for a variety of reasons. She is inexperienced sexually because she has by choice and circumstance never had a relationship with a man. With Ethan’s attention and nurturing, she slowly overcomes her insecurities and gains confidence. In this setting her muse flourishes and her art comes to the attention of some wealthy, prominent patrons. Karlyn’s work is in demand.

Ms. O’Hurley pens a couple of surprising plot twists into the The Lottery and she also develops strong secondary characters, in Karlyn’s friend Sam, Ethan’s sister Bailey and his grandmother Evangeline. When Ethan suffers an unbearable loss the tenuous trust and love he built with Karlyn is lost. The question is can they get past his anger and volatile rejection of her, and be reunited?

I had a couple of small niggles with this read, one is there is no indication as to why there are so few men in the population. There is a mention of pre-war clothing so I’m assuming there was a conflict of some description but maybe I missed something? lol Also, there were some grammatical and language issues that I felt should have been addressed in the editing process but this is no fault of the author.

Overall, I enjoyed The Lottery very much. I found it to be a multilayered story, set in a world with a reversal of the male/female role in many respects coupled with an established class system where wealthy women sat on the top rung of the ladder. I really liked Ethan and Karlyn, I felt for them and wanted to learn how their story would end. I will look forward to reading more of Ms. O’Hurley’s work.

The Lottery is a sexually explicit erotic romance that does have a scene with an orgy, light bondage, submission, and anal sex, so be forewarned if this genre isn’t your cuppa. ;)

I’m Watching The Clock…

Hellooooo out there! Yes, Tori and I are still here muddling along. As usual, I’m pleading the 5th & chalking my blog absenteeism up to being busy to the point of going down for the third time in an avalanche of books. But, who is to blame for that? Um, one guess – me. lol I’ve also been trying to fit in time to do an online course that is proving to be fun. I don’t think I’m going to have much time to dedicate to it until April though. In the background I’ve been working on closetreader to update it a little, making a few changes. :-)

March is a really busy month for me over at BLI. I am and have hosted a few authors and committed to a number of reviews. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has stopped by and said Hi, I appreciate it more than you can know.

A special thank you goes out to Chris for mentioning the BLI giveaway posts and other goings on in her weekly Linkety. You are awesome Chris!

Authors watch for at BLI in the next couple of weeks? Olivia Cunning, Beth Kery, Vivian Arend, & Larissa Ione, along with reviews of their latest books.

I had a really nice e-mail from new to me author Alexandra O’Hurley asking if I’d like to read and review her book “The Lottery”, a while ago. She even asked if I’d review it here at closetreader. Even though I explained it would take a while to get to her book she sent it my way. Anyway, I have read her wonderful story and will post my thoughts soon. Alexandra – if your out there – I hope to get your review done in the next couple of weeks.. Apologies for the delay.

Some interesting books have come my way lately that are in the cue, including a YA, a m/m military romance, and a fantasy story all of which look promising.

Lastly a heartfelt ((hug)) goes out to my good Blogger friend Ms.Moonlight who has made the difficult decision to close her blog “Moonlight To Twilight” for personal reasons. Ms.M. and I started our blogs about the same time and I’ve always enjoyed her quirky sense of humor resulting in fun posts and honest book reviews. She will be missed in the blogging community but I think we all understand how life demands take precedence.

Oh, and my TBR Challenge – as you can see I’m doing well.. (NOT) LOLOLOL Man, what was I thinking?

The temperature has moderated somewhat here today and I’m looking forward to walking the pooches later. Tori is doing well BTW. I’m also clock watching because it “springs forward” tonight and there is a book to finish and review to write. YIKES.. lol

I hope all of you are doing well! Anything new, as in good news? Spring is coming – I can feel it.. ;)

A Google Undersea Exploration?

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this morning but the Google logo has this whole undersea exploration thing going on. It is quite intriguing actually, but after watching it for a bit I got a little queasy because it is constantly moving. Then I had to visit the little girls room.. (The power of suggestion, that happened while watching the movie “Titanic” too – all that rushing water.)

Not too sure what it signifies though. However, when you wake up to -34 degree Celsius temperatures, an ocean can look pretty inviting. Even if, you are not into the deep sea diving thing..

Anyway, have to work now. If anyone knows what is with the Google logo, I’d love to hear! O_O

Have a great day everyone! :-)

Note To Self…

When you are enjoying the depths of winter, as in freezing temperatures, blizzards, knee deep snow, chapped lips, raw hands and the darkness that brings on an intense case of the “blues”. Do not, let the gray/white roots of your hair grow out 3 inches. It intensifies said blues.

Recognizing this is a miniscule thing given the state of the world it still merited a phone call to the place called “salon” that holds “the tube of youth”.

Then of course there is the good news from said salon that your hairdresser of many years (as in about 7) no longer works at said establishment. Oh. Joy.

So. Self. You now have an appointment next Saturday first thing in the morning with a new hairdresser who holds the fate of your coif in her hands. Don’t be scared – it won’t hurt… Much… And, it has got to be better than the ET look you are currently sporting because of wearing a hoodie to work every day.

And a note to the Amazon.com reader(s) who has (have) sent yet another, um less then pleasant e-mail with respect to reviews that I’ve posted at said site.

*Scratching messy hair covered head with gray roots*

  1. Last time I looked, which was yesterday when I got home at 9 PM after a 13 hour work day, there were no royalty cheques stuffed in my mailbox for sharing said reviews at the site in question.
  2. My reviews may well “suck” but it is your choice to read them. *shrugs*
  3. You have a hell of a lot of time on your hands if you have read through every one of said reviews and feel it’s necessary to point out their failings.
  4. I do not consider myself a “writer”.
  5. Grow. Up.
  6. Thank you for your, ‘feedback’, but I’ve now blocked your IP address and will not address this further.

Oh, and by the way, self, DO NOT share any more “reviews” (or whatever the hell they are) over at Amazon.com because it just isn’t worth the hassle. o_O

And the body attached to the head harboring the ET mask – so not mine…

Musings #3: Procrastination…

Procrastination:

  • To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness.
  • To postpone or delay needlessly.

I think I like the second definition better, it’s less um… pathetic..

There is an art to procrastinating don’t you know.

And yes, there is still a bunch of bananas in Tori’s closet. Don’t get me started.

Returning to my cave to do some more, procrastinating.

Or, maybe I’ll eat a banana in the least objectionable way possible. Bananas are very phallic in appearance you know? If you take a bite out of one then you “are going down on the thing“; if you use a knife to cut bite sized pieces there is this whole “Bobbit” connotation *shiver*; or if you break off bite sized pieces, it just seems, I don’t know — cruel.

Yes I know, I’m procrastinating, about eating a banana…. How pathetic is that?

But seriously, what is the correct etiquette for eating a piece of phallic fruit?

*shrugs*
